Inspired by Black History Month and Women's History Month, the Academy of American Poets marked April as National Poetry Month in 1996. Since then, it has become an opportunity to turn the world's attention toward the art of poetry and its importance. It is a time to celebrate poetry's expressiveness, delight, and pure charm. It marks a month-long special occasion to remind us of the integral role of poets and poetry in our society. Poetry helps us appreciate the world around us and empathize with one another. HGCS teams annually with St. Martin’s/HopeWorks to provide 300 “Merry Bags” to HopeWorks clients at Christmas. HopeWorks is the largest nonprofit organization in New Mexico working to end homelessness with systems of coordinated, especially for mental illness. For over thirty years, HopeWorks has been providing wraparound care for clients to help them stay healthy, happy, and housed. “St. Martin’s HopeWorks has been at the forefront of working to end homelessness.
Our 6th grade students participated in the Tech Flight program at the AFRL La Luz Academy on Kirtland Air Force Base. Here our students spent the day launching rockets with the guidance with scientists from AFRL and KAF organizations.
Over the years, Holy Ghost Catholic School has had a long standing relationship with the Air Force Research Lab and our students participate in many of the STEM Outreach programs they offer! Our 5th grade class has participated in the Department of Defense STARBASE program for the past 10 years. STARBASE New Mexico is part of a national program that provides fifth grade students with an opportunity to explore physics, chemistry, technology, engineering, mathematics operations and applications, and STEM careers.
Holy Ghost Catholic School has launched an 8 week collaboration with Level Up Village (LUV), a global Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) program. LUV delivers pioneering global STEAM enrichment courses that promote design thinking and 1-to-1 collaboration between students around the world. To read the full press release, click here.
Throughout the school year our students are given opportunities to serve in the community by attending service learning field trips. Our 8th graders went on a service learning field trip to the Tijeras Arroyo where they spent time installing trail signs, digging trenches to stabilize hills and prevent erosion and planting grass seeds. Our 6th and 7th grade students went on a service learning field trip to clear brush along trails at Pueblo Montano Picnic Area and Trailhead that is maintained by the City of Albuquerque Open Space!
